Finding an Internship in the USA

Don’t be afraid to look for an internship or training program on your own. American employers appreciate individuals who take initiative, and the more energy you put into searching for a position, the more likely it is you will find a program that suits you. While you are looking for an internship, consider completing the application for the InterExchange J-1 Visa Sponsorship Program. Then, once you have identified an internship or training program, all you have to do is send us your application.

Before you begin to look for an internship, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements for a J-1 Visa.

Resumes and Supporting Documents

Next, begin to work on your resume and supporting documents that U.S. employers typically require from applicants. Your resume should summarize your educational background, your relevant work experience, and the type of internship for which you are looking. Here are some tips on creating U.S.-style resumes.

Searching for an Internship

As soon as you have your resume in order, you should begin to look for employers in the USA who might have opportunities that suit you. Positions in the USA are very competitive, so you should start searching as soon as possible. Here are some tips and resources for looking for an internship in the USA.

Applying and Interviewing with American Employers

When you find an opportunity that interests you, you should apply directly to the employer. If the company is interested in hiring you as an intern or trainee, they will conduct an interview, usually over the phone, but sometimes via webcam. Review our tips for applying and interviewing with American employers.

Accepting an Internship Offer

Applying for an internship/training program can be a long and difficult process, so when you receive an internship offer, it can be very exciting! In your excitement, you may be tempted to accept your offer immediately. However, it's important that you understand the terms of your offer before you accept the position so that there are no surprises once you arrive in the U.S. Read our tips on considering an offer.

J-1 Visa Sponsorship

After you receive an offer, InterExchange can sponsor your J-1 Visa. You and your employer will both need to complete J-1 Visa application materials and submit them to InterExchange. If your application is approved, you will need to schedule and attend a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country. The process takes approximately 1 - 2 months from the time you submit your application until you arrive in the USA and begin working. Collecting your application materials will take some additional time, so to speed up the process, complete our J-1 Visa Sponsorship application before you start looking for a position. Then, once you have an internship, all you have to do is send us your complete application. Request an application.
