Orientation & Training

InterExchange offers the longest, most extensive orientation session of any au pair agency. Our mandatory, five-day orientation in New York City provides extensive information on child development, and safety. Plus, it helps au pairs begin the adjustment to American culture, and offers valuable information about living in the US

Orientation Topics include:

  • Child Development for newborns through age 12
  • Communicating with Children
  • First Aid, CPR, and Rescue Breathing
  • Accident Prevention Awareness
  • Car, Fire, Toy, Indoor and Outdoor Safety
  • J-1 Visa rules
  • Au Pair USA program information and policies
  • Insurance & Social Security

Training with the Host Family

For the first three days after the au pair arrives at the host family’s home, one or both of the host parents stay at home to help familiarize the au pair with the family’s routines, schedules, and habits. The local coordinator also checks in periodically during this time to make sure that everyone is adjusting well to the new situation. InterExchange makes sure that both au pairs and host families have ample support during the first days of the placement—as well as throughout the year.
