How to apply
If your family is interested in an extension program, you will need to download the Extension Application and fill in the Host Family section. Your au pair will have to fill in the Au Pair section and submit proof that she has completed the educational requirements. We must receive the applications and educational documentation at least 40 days before the extension period will begin. The U.S. Department of State must approve the request, so it’s important to adhere to these deadlines.

Traveling Outside the US During an Extension
Au pairs who wish to travel outside the US during their approved extension period would have to acquire a new J-1 visa in order to return to the US. To acquire a new J-1 visa the au pair would have to apply to an American Embassy or Consulate outside the US. When applying for any visa, there is always a risk that the request may be denied. In such cases, the au pair would not be able to re-enter the US. We welcome you to call us for more information about this topic.
Continuing Education Opportunities
During the extension period, au pairs are required to complete additional educational requirements as part of their program. For a 6 month extension, au pairs must complete 3 credit hours of classes at an accredited post-secondary academic institution and will receive a $250 educational stipend form their host family to put toward the cost of meeting these requirements. For a 9 month extension, au pairs must complete 6 credit hours of classes at an accredited post-secondary academic institution and will receive a $500 educational stipend form their host family to put toward the cost of meeting these requirements. For a 12 month extension, au pairs must complete 6 credit hours of classes at an accredited post-secondary academic institution and will receive a $500 educational stipend form their host family to put toward the cost of meeting these requirements.
