H-2B Visa Program FAQs for International Workers
Q. Can students participate in the H-2B Visa program?
A. Students and non-students are accepted into the program. However, if you are a student, you may also be eligible for our Work & Travel program.
Q. What are the age limits for the program?
A. This program is open only to participants ages 18-40.
Q. How long can I stay in the U.S.?
A. Your H-2B Visa is only valid during your employer's season, typically 5-6 months in duration.
Q. What is the timeline for the visa process?
A. The visa process takes approximately 4-5 months, so we advise interested applicants to apply to the program 6 months in advance of their work start date.
Q. How much will I be paid?
A. You will be paid the prevailing wage: the same wage that an American worker would receive for the same job. Most jobs typically pay $6-$10 per hour, with opportunities for overtime.
Q. Will housing be provided?
A. We recommend that most employers arrange suitable housing for their employees at an affordable rate.
Q. Can I work a second job when I am in the U.S.?
A. No. The visa stipulates that you are able to work only for the employer on your visa documentation. It is illegal to work for another employer.
Q. I am already in the U.S. on a J-1 Visa or F-1 Visa. Can I transfer to the H-2B Visa without returning home?
A. No. We do not transfer other visa categories to the H-2B Visa.
Q. Can I travel after my job finishes?
A. No. An H-2B Visa is strictly a work visa. If you are interested in traveling after your job and you are an international student, you may want to consider our Work & Travel program. You must return to your home country as soon as your job finishes. However, you are allowed to travel during your days off and any vacation that your employer gives you.
Q. I worked in the U.S. under the J-1 Visa program. Can I participate in the H-2B program?
A. Yes. Previous J-1 participants are eligible for an H-2B Visa.
Q. Is there an orientation in New York like the Work & Travel J-1 program?
A. No. After you obtain the H-2B Visa from the U.S. Consulate, you can arrange transportation directly to your employer in the U.S.
Q. How much does the program cost?
A. Please contact the InterExchange H-2B Visa USA program and we will be able to give you that information.
