About the Costs

What does it cost to use our service? Nothing. InterExchange Work & Travel USA is a free service to U.S. employers. As a non-profit organization promoting cultural exchange, our goal is to find exceptional staff for your business, and to help international students experience life in the United States.  You are only responsible for staff compensation. See below for details.

Wages & Taxes

When you hire an international student with a J-1 Visa, you must follow certain rules set forth by the U.S. Department of State regarding compensation.  Specifically, you must pay international staff what you would pay an American employee doing the same job, while adhering to state minimum wage laws.

You’ll find that there are certain tax advantages to hiring international students for seasonal positions. Because staff on a J-1 Visa are considered non-resident aliens, you should not withhold their Social Security (FICA), Medicare, or federal unemployment (FUTA) taxes. Depending on your state’s laws, the employees may be exempt from state unemployment taxes. Your tax professional can tell you if this is the case.

What Our Employers Say

“The InterExchange reps have always been supportive and helpful. We’ve always had the opportunity to speak to our reps by telephone… not just on email. We like receiving applications and having the ability to choose the students that we feel would be the best match for our jobs.”
