Local Representatives

The Local Representative (“LR”) plays an important role in the Work & Travel USA program. A Local Representative’s primary responsibilities are to introduce local seasonal employers to the benefits of the Work & Travel USA program and to ensure that international student participants in their area have opportunities to engage in cultural activities or events outside of work. Local Representatives are independent contractors who work from home part-time on a commission basis to promote the program, generate new leads and provide basic follow up with seasonal employers in their regions. During the seasons when international students are in country, Local Representatives will identify, plan, initialize and organize local cultural events and other activities that provide students with exposure to American society, culture and values.

Local Representatives are self-starters who are great at making connections and enjoy acting as a resource for clients and students. Local Representatives use their knowledge of the local business community and superior communication skills to recruit area businesses who would like to hire and host international student employees during their busy seasons. Additionally, Local Representatives will use their community knowledge to collect information on local events, offerings and resources as well as plan events for international students during their work program participation. Local Representatives will report to Regional Managers and may also work closely with other staff in our New York City headquarters. Local Representatives will not be responsible for monitoring or orienting or counseling participants, or any other roles already assumed by InterExchange.

Position Requirements:

  • Become conversant in how the program can benefit seasonal employers
  • Establish and elevate the brand profile of InterExchange Work & Travel USA in the local area
  • Follow up on employer leads provided and/or approved by New York office to locate seasonal staffing positions
  • Sell program to local seasonal employers using a personalized approach
  • Work with Regional Managers to screen and vet interested employers
  • Network and establish relationships with local business organizations (Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, etc.)
  • Organize and lead cultural activities and excursions with aid from the Regional Managers and key staff in the New York City headquarters
  • Assist with student monitoring during program months by performing periodic site visits as deemed necessary by InterExchange
  • Evaluate and report living/working conditions of specified participants in your region

Local Representatives will:

  • Have an enthusiasm and interest for international cultural exchange programs
  • Maintain a strong sense of professional ethics and standards, as well as personal integrity
  • Possess superb verbal and written communication skills
  • Show exceptional follow-through initiative and dependability
  • Be inquisitive and resourceful with strong internet research skills
  • Have a flexible schedule (must be able to meet local employers at their convenience)
  • Be a good driver with a car and comprehensive automobile insurance coverage, although you will not be responsible for transporting students
  • Be highly organized, resourceful, connected to your community and have experience working with students and young adults
  • Pass a background check
