Become an Au Pair in New Zealand

Magnificently rich in natural beauty, New Zealand is a small country that boasts a myriad of landscapes. From volcanoes, to mountains and beaches, to cosmopolitan cities, New Zealand has something to offer everyone. Hike through the hills of “Middle Earth,” spend a day at the beach, or visit the islands welcoming cities. Most importantly, get a glimpse into the lives and culture of some of the nicest people and their communities. With Australia just a hop, skip and a jump away, you can explore a lot of what the Southern Hemisphere has to offer.

A typical Kiwi host family will have 2-3 children, most often between the ages of 1 and 12. Most host families live in detached 4-5 bedroom homes with a back garden. It is typical for both Mum and Dad to go to work, though some au pairs will be in a parent help role, where one parent is home much of the time. Families usually have 2 cars and will sometimes have a car just for the au pair’s use. New Zealand families often enjoy spending time outdoors and will often spend time together as a family on the weekends.

As an au pair in New Zealand, you can expect to play with and entertain your host children. You may also attend the children’s activities and classes with them, drop off and pick up from school, and cook or prepare snacks and meals for the children. Au pairs enrolled in our 4-and-under program will be also be educating young children through play at home. You will be responsible for tidying away toys at the end of the day and completing light housework pertaining to your host children.

Our participants say

"InterExchange answered all my questions and told me what to expect abroad. The fee for this program was extremely affordable compared to other programs that I had looked into. The program in Spain afforded me the opportunity to submerse myself in the local culture and learn their customs hands on."
— Maria, Au Pair Spain
