Teach English in Chile

Stretching down the western coast of South America, Chile is a beautiful and enchanting country. Bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and the east by the Andes mountains, the country has a widely varied climate and breathtaking scenery. Chile also has a proud cultural history rich in music, literature, sports, and cuisine. Chileans take great pride in both their Spanish and native American heritage.

Program Details

The Teach English in Chile program was created to expose public and subsidized school students throughout Chile to native English speakers.  You’ll work as a volunteer with Chilean English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers to provide classroom support, motivate students, and teach English skills. This highly regarded program has led to very positive feedback from local communities, host families, schools and Chilean society in general.

Participants usually receive teaching placements after their arrival in Chile. Placements are throughout Chile, in Northern and Southern areas, as well as rural and urban communities.

When you arrive, you’ll attend a two day orientation program in our local cooperator's office in Santiago that covers different aspects of life in Chile, such as cultural differences, geography, manners, expectations, culture shock, and more.

Afterwards, a week-long orientation is conducted by the Chilean Ministry of Education covering the Chilean educational system, EFL teaching methods and other issues. Finally, you’ll spend 3 to 4 days observing classes and undergoing training at the host site.

Once in the school, you’ll work for 25 hours per week in the classroom, plus an additional 10 hours per week planning lessons and leading extra-curricular activities. Volunteers will receive a monthly stipend of CLP 85,000 (approximately $180 as of July 2011).

As a Participant in Teach in Chile, you’ll receive:

  • Transfer upon arrival from Santiago city airport to accommodation site
  • Arrival orientation in Santiago with room and board included for two nights in Santiago
