Who to Recruit
Supervising another person’s child is an enormous responsibility. Therefore, working as a summer camp counselor is an essential (and challenging) job! Counselors must embody patience, maturity, and responsibility, as these are not just qualities, but the pillars of their role, underscoring the gravity of their responsibilities.
The ability to speak English proficiently is not just a skill; it’s a necessity for a prospective counselor. Strong English skills are not just important, they are essential when teaching activities and communicating effectively for all other aspects of camp. If a counselor does not understand or speak English well, they will find it challenging to match and may be at risk of a visa denial.
Camp is an ever-changing environment, so counselors need to be open-minded, flexible, and have a positive attitude. The ability to handle stressful situations constructively is essential for a counselor. They must be prepared to spend the entire day with the campers, acting maturely and responsibly around them and their fellow teammates.
Most importantly, an individual who wishes to be a camp counselor in the United States should genuinely care about the welfare of children and be interested in learning about life in the U.S. This program is not about making a lot of money. Still, it offers something far more valuable-an enriching experience and the opportunity to grow as individuals.
Requirements for Counselors
Pre-screen potential applicants to ensure they meet all the requirements below before they complete an application.
- Availability is crucial! Applicants must be able to start no later than June 15th and stay until at least August 15th. The broader the range of availability, the better their chances of matching.
- Age is a factor we consider. We prefer applicants between the ages of 19 and 25, but we also welcome those aged 18 and 28.
- Skills: The more specialized and experienced, the better. They should have relevant certification or training in the activity and/or show strong teaching experience.
- Eligibility is based on specific criteria. Applicants must prove they are a student, teacher, bona fide youth worker, or have specialized skills relevant to the position.
Skills
- Activity Counselors must hold relevant certifications, training, or demonstrate strong teaching experience in their specialty area. Many states require certification for certain activities (e.g., lifeguarding), which is why camps actively seek certified staff. However, many camps are willing to train enthusiastic candidates who lack formal certification.
- General Counselors support a wide variety of activities and camper needs.
- Open-minded, flexible, and patient – responsibilities vary widely by camp.
- Adaptable – duties can change daily and often involve multiple activities.
- Collaborative – ready to live and work closely with staff and campers.

Coordinator candidates should have leadership experience and be comfortable with challenging conversations with both campers and staff.”
Camps for Adults/ Children with Special Needs
Special needs counselors work with campers who face a wide variety of challenges, including physical, mental, behavioral, and learning disabilities. The position requires patience, a lot of energy, and, most importantly, respect for the campers. Responsibilities may include bathing, lifting, and assisting with the overall care of campers. The types and degrees of disabilities vary greatly between camps.
A special needs counselor should have a general interest in or prior experience working with this population. Many special needs camps will take counselors with no previous experience as long as they are open-minded and motivated to learn. Many special needs camps hire a large number of international staff.
Working at a special needs camp can be both challenging and tremendously rewarding.
