Summer is almost here, and in New Jersey that means that it’s strawberry season! If you are looking for a fun, kid-friendly activity this weekend, look no more! There are two great local farms where you can pick your own delicious, ripe strawberries.

The Bonacorsi Family Farm at 1137 Croton Road in Flemington is a great place to start. Pick your own (PYO) strawberries are $3 per quart and pre-picked berries on the stand are $5 per quart.

Melicks Town Farm at 170 Oldwick Road in Oldwick is another great option. Strawberries are $5.99 per pound.

Strawberries are a delicious vitamin C packed snack on their own. They are also great on top of yogurt or ice cream. Here is a quick and easy recipe for my favorite summer salad topped with strawberries.

  • 1 package of baby arugula (or your favorite salad greens)
  • 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts
  • 1/3 cup crumbled Gorgonzola cheese
  • 2 grilled chicken breasts, diced
  • 1 cup sliced strawberries
  • Balsamic vinaigrette, to taste

Add salad greens to a large bowl. Mix in walnuts, cheese, strawberries, chicken, and salad dressing. Toss gently. Serve immediately.
