Your dream to intern in New York doesn’t need to stay a dream – Anouck made hers come true!

It has always been a dream to go to New York City. When I heard that I was approved to do a six-month internship for academic credit at Artemis Academy, the decision to go to New York was quickly made. Soon I came into contact with a partnering agency, who helped me get in touch with Christy. After a Skype appointment, we were both enthusiastic about the opportunity. Shortly after, the contract was signed and I was ready to start my internship at Christy Rilling Studio. The whole process to find a host company only took me a week! This partnering agency got me in contact with InterExchange to sponsor my visa. InterExchange has been a major help for me during the program!

Learning the ropes of fashion design in New York can be daunting, but not when you have a great host employer.

A typical day at Christy Rilling Studio often starts at 10 am. I often check the clothing racks when I come in to see if certain things need to be purchased. I sometimes add finishing touches together with Michelle. There are many times that I attend a fitting with Christy to learn more about how to work with customers. After many visits to the Garment District, I have a good idea where I can find the best fabrics.

Success doesn’t stop at the end of the working day – utilize your resources as much as possible!

In addition to the work I do in the studio, I also have a lot of time to undertake my own projects. After working hours, my supervisor gives me the opportunity to use the studio to work on personal projects. It is a goal of mine to one day have my own clothing line. I use this time to work on designs for my line so that I can bring them to life with the professional advice of all my colleagues from Christy Rilling Studio.

Experience culture in and out of the workplace!

What I really enjoy about my internship is the exchange of cultures between myself and my colleagues. I feel extremely welcomed in the studio and notice that everyone is super interested in Dutch culture. As a surprise, they occasionally even have Dutch delicacies, which I love!

I also live in The Webster Apartments, where it’s super easy to meet other people living in New York – in addition those at my internship. Together with my housemates, I discover more of the American culture, such as sporting events or going to local restaurants. Webster Apartments also organizes certain events to meet more people. We have movie nights and the opportunity to play some sports.

InterExchange wants to make sure you have the best internship experience!

I would certainly point out that it is nice that there is someone for you throughout your entire program! If you have any questions, you can always email or even visit the InterExchange office. InterExchange also organizes events themselves, so you get to know more people who go through the same process as you.

** There is also a special discount for InterExchange interns who apply to live in the Webster Apartments. Learn more about the promotion!
