Fibian J.R. from Nigeria

Former Marketing Intern in Hauppauge, NY

What first made you interested in pursuing a career in your chosen field?

I have always been interested in business. Right from high school, I was always selling one thing or the other to friends and family. So I decided to become a professional in it and build a global career in Marketing.

How has your experience interning/training through InterExchange helped you to learn more about your field?

As an intern, I learnt a lot about the practical aspects of international business and the American market. I learnt new ways of connecting with clients and how to build a customer base online. My experience has given me an edge in the job market plus, I have gained a life time experience, professionally and socially.

Please describe some of your favorite projects from your J-1 internship/training program.

My favorite project during my internship program was building a client database online. I became an expert at it. The fun part was learning about different companies and industries, what they do and how our company can improve their businesses. I talked to a lot of them and in some cases made friends with them and I loved the new knowledge I had gained.

Plus, the InterExchange trip to the UN is something I will always remember.

And I am also a contract teacher at the small business school in Jos. I love teaching others what I have learnt so far and I am also working at getting the job that will enable me to put my experience to good use.

What advice do you have for young people looking to enter your field?

First of all, you have to love what you do. If you do, it’s easy to build and grow in it. Marketing is an interesting field. It allows you to build character and resilience. And it opens up doors for you to meet new people almost on a daily bases, you never know who you will meet. It’s a field filled with challenges.. as you overcome the challenges you face, you will be proud of yourself and look forward to the next challenge, plus, life can be boring without challenges.
