Interview with Anemone L., former Career Training USA Intern from Belgium
Anemone, who completed a six-month internship in tourism and travel services management in 2015, fully took advantage of her time in the U.S. We asked her to share her memories of her experience and tell us where she is now.
When I finished my internship in NYC, I took one month to realize one of my dreams: I went through so many states in only one month, backpacking just by myself and meeting great people on the way.
My itinerary brought me to the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and Montana (my best memory for sure); then to Vancouver, Canada where I went whale watching; then San Francisco, Napa/Sonoma Valley, San Luis Obispo where I went sea kayaking in the Dinosaur Caves, Los Angeles and Santa Monica, San Diego and La Jolla in California; then to Vegas, the West Rim in the Grand Canyon National Park, the Hoover Dam from where I went rafting in the Black Canyon on the mythic Colorado River; and Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona.
My last flights before returning to Belgium were to Miami, Florida where I enjoyed such a crystal blue water and got sunburned, but also discovered the wonders of Everglades National Park, went scuba diving, and saw the sunset on the Keys!
I finally ended this incredible adventure by landing in New Orleans I went to the plantations, but also fell back in love with the Princess and the Frog Disney film when I saw in real life the gator territory on a swamp boat tour. I will never forget that special atmosphere in Louisiana.
Which brings me to the point of your question: I am sure you can understand that I'll never be the same after that.
So I returned to Belgium, more ambitious than ever before as I was so close to reaching my goal: being able to get a job in Brussels in an international company in order to continue to speak and practice the English level I gained during this exchange program. A few months later, I can tell you that it's done!
I am now working in a French travel company, organizing journeys on high-speed trains for groups through the entire Europe.
I've been hired to take charge of the U.K. market that moved to their Brussels office in January. I met my new native English speaking colleagues and friends (an Australian and a British guy) and reached my goal that I had in mind since I began my tourism studies: speaking and working in English everyday, dealing with varied situations for customers in a foreign language. Everything is going quite good so far.
