Although February can be a chilly reminder that winter isn't over yet, there are lots of vibrant festivals, big and small, going on around the world this month.
And if you are on an InterExchange Working Abroad program, you're almost certain to be within a train ride away from many of the festivals on the Lonely Planet lis for festivals around the world in February 2013.
Here are a few of our favorites that Lonely Planet listed:
- The Harbin International Ice & Snow festival; Hāěrbīn, China. Located in northern China, Harbin is a frozen part of the world in the winter. But, locals make the best of the cold climate and abundance of ice and snow by building amazing ice sculptures, ice slides and letting visitors finally knock down everything on the last day of the festival! January 5 - February 15.
- St. Valentine's Day; Terni, Italy. If you are a fan of the flower and chocolates holiday, than visiting Terni, Italy will be a must. Although there are activities all month, February 14th is, of course, the day to really share in the love. There is a giant feast that surrounds the Basilica that day anyone can participate in, as well as local craftspeople selling their wares. From February 1-28, but February 14 specifically.
- Art Deco Weekend; Napier and Hastings, New Zealand. For all of our New Zealand participants, and F. Scott Fitzgerald fans, the third weekend of February in Napier and Hastings is the place to be to appreciate one of the world's best examples of Art Deco architecture. With themed dinners, balls and performances, make sure your flapper and/or Gatsby style is in peak form. The third weekend of February.
- Tenerife Carnival; Santa Cruz, Canary Islands, Spain. Although most North Americans know about (or have visited) Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the biggest carnival celebration is actually on a tiny island off of Spain. For participants in Western European countries, the Tenerife Carnival is your chance to get in the party spirit with about a quarter of a million of your closest friends! Remember to book your accommodations well in advance. February 12, 2013, or Fat Tuesday.
