Do you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience? Come volunteer with InterExchange at the 50th anniversary of the New York City Marathon!

Why the NYC Marathon Is So Special

The TCS New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world. In 2025, more than 59,000 runners finished the race, a world record. Every year, runners come from over 160 countries to run through New York City’s five boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan.

In 2026, the marathon celebrates its 50th anniversary. The race first ran through all five boroughs in 1976, and it has grown every year since. Watching runners of all backgrounds and abilities complete 26.2 miles is a powerful experience. Many people say they cry happy tears while watching. More than two million spectators come out to cheer, making the whole city feel like one big celebration.

Volunteering here is one of the best ways to see the spirit of New York, and the spirit of the United States, up close.

Join InterExchange as a Volunteer

InterExchange is partnering with the Department of State (DOS) to organize a volunteer group at the marathon. We will cheer for runners and pass out water.

Volunteer spots are almost full. Spots are given on a first-come, first-served basis, so please sign up soon.

If you cannot get a volunteer spot, you can still join the fun! You do not need to be a volunteer to watch the race. You can find a spot along the course, cheer for runners, and even make a sign.

What Will You Do?

As a “Fluid Station” volunteer, you will:

  • Help set up the station
  • Hand out water and Gatorade to runners
  • Cheer runners on as they pass by

Please note: This is a long shift, and you will be standing the whole time. Volunteers must stay for the entire shift.

Can’t make it after you register? No problem — you can cancel closer to the marathon date. We still recommend signing up early, since spots fill up fast!

Health and Safety

All runners and volunteers must follow federal, state, and local health and safety rules. You can find these rules on the NYRR website.
