Alabama

The Heart of Dixie

“Sir” and “ma’am” are normal, everyday signs of respect in Alabama, not old-fashioned formality, part of a Southern hospitality that shapes daily conversation. The nickname “Heart of Dixie” points to Alabama’s place at the geographic center of the old Confederate South, and Montgomery briefly served as its first capital.

College football is central to social life, especially the rivalry between the University of Alabama and Auburn, dividing loyalty across nearly every family and workplace. Slow-cooked barbecue served with a vinegar-and-black-pepper white sauce, found nowhere else, reflects the state’s distinct food culture.

Montgomery and Birmingham hold deep significance as sites of the Civil Rights Movement, while Huntsville, called “Rocket City,” reflects a side of Alabama tied to real space exploration work.
