The Volunteer State
Country music in Nashville and blues and soul in Memphis give Tennessee two entirely different musical identities within one state, and asking locals about the difference reveals real regional pride on both sides. The state’s nickname, “The Volunteer State,” comes from the War of 1812, when Tennessee men volunteered for military service in numbers large enough to help win the decisive Battle of New Orleans.
Nashville Hot Chicken and Memphis-style barbecue ribs reflect this same split identity through food. Live music fills Nashville’s Broadway during the day, much of it free to enjoy on the street.
The Great Smoky Mountains, the most visited national park in the country, offer more than 800 miles of trails to the east.
