Your J-1 guide to

Washington

The Evergreen State

Around Seattle, people can seem reserved at first, a pattern locals call the “Seattle Freeze,” which does not mean unfriendliness, just a longer road to real friendship. Eastern Washington, drier and more rural, tends to feel more direct and immediately welcoming by comparison. The nickname “Evergreen State” comes from the thick, year-round green forests covering much of the western half of the state.

Coffee culture is genuinely serious here, part of a wider spirit of innovation that also built companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Starbucks in Seattle, alongside the city’s 1990s grunge music legacy.

Mount Rainier rises above evergreen forests statewide, and Olympic National Park protects temperaterare rainforest and rugged coastline.
