Volunteering at the NYC Marathon

For the second year in a row, InterExchange is organizing a special volunteering opportunity for our participants at the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6, 2016! Over 70 InterExchange participants joined the event last year and we hope 2016 will be a great success as well!

The New York City Marathon, which has been run every year since 1970, is the largest marathon in the world: 50,000 runners participate every year, representing more than 120 countries. More than 10,000 volunteers support the runners from the moment they begin their journey to the finish line.

The U.S. Department of State is coordinating this volunteer event for all J-1 Visa sponsors in the New York City area, so this will be a unique opportunity to meet participants from other J-1 programs.

The U.S. Department of State J-1 fluid station will be located at Mile 6 in Brooklyn (Fourth Ave between 23rd and 24th Street) close to the D, N, R subways. The InterExchange group will be volunteering  from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. If you can’t make it to the InterExchange shift, you can register for one of the other volunteer opportunities:

  • 6:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.
  • 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
  • 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. (InterExchange shift)

The U.S. Department of State will also have exclusive registration for the first shift (7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) at the Mile 18 fluid station in Manhattan (First Avenue between 96th and 97th Street, a 4-block walk from the 6 train subway line).

"Fluid station" volunteers assist with set-up, distribute water and Gatorade to the runners, and cheer them on. Please note that volunteers must commit to the entire shift.

If you are interested in volunteering with InterExchange for this event, please follow the registration instructions below. Volunteer slots are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis and fill up fast. If you register and can’t make it, you can cancel your participation closer to the date of the marathon. We recommend reserving your spot as soon as possible.

The deadline to register was Wednesday, August 31, 2016. If you have questions about your prior registration, please email [email protected].
