You're seeking an adventure abroad and hands-on international experience. And you want to check-off some bucket-list adventures at the same time.
If this and more is true, then Sustainable Action Costa Rica is for you.
With more than 50 years of experience engaging students and young professionals in life-changing cultural exchange programs, InterExchange is your ideal guide for personal growth and adventure. We'll take you to Costa Rica for an 8-day, intensive, and fun-filled program during your winter break or gap year, and you'll experience social and environmental sustainability in action. We'll tackle questions like:
- What do the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) look like in practice?
- What does it mean to move the world in a sustainable direction?
- What are the academic and career possibilities that exist in this area?
You and your group will travel from San Jose to La Fortuna and back, exploring how local NGOs are tackling challenges of environmental and social sustainability. Guided group activities and discussions will take your inquiry deeper. Along the way you'll have the chance to hike along a volcano, swim in a waterfall, zipline across pristine rainforest, and spot local wildlife!
Your program will consist of three main components:
1) Site Visits and Volunteering
Gaining hands-on experience and insight into the issues that animate our world today is essential. Sustainable Action Costa Rica will provide you an immersive engagement with global development topics.
Each day, we'll dive into the world of sustainability in Costa Rica. We'll visit local organizations to gain insight into major social and environmental challenges in the country, and innovative solutions. These organizations include a sustainable hotel, an ecological reserve, an NGO focused on local education and self-advancement, and more. Our group will take a hands-on role by giving of our time and effort through volunteer work.
2) Group Activities, Discussion, and Reflection
Reflection and discussion is key to making sense of it all. Guided by experienced group leaders, we'll take time each day to process our daily experiences through reflections, discussions, games, and other group activities. The enriching intellectual aspects of the program kick off prior to departure with an orientation and short readings and videos. Upon returning to the U.S., you'll be supported with further opportunities for intercultural engagement and sharing your experience with new audiences.
3) Adventure Activities
Along the way, we'll stay active with hikes at Arenal Volcano and in nearby rainforests, swims at a waterfall, a zipline tour, and a dip in local hot springs. Come prepared for an active program, both mentally and physically!
