Do I need a visa?
U.S. citizens do not need visas to enter the Schengen area and are permitted to stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. You will simply enter the Schengen area (which includes Italy) with your valid U.S. passport. For more information on the Schengen area, please visit the U.S. Department of State's website.
Do I need to know Italian?
No. You will not need to know Italian, nor will you be required to take Italian classes abroad (although you are welcome to if you want, of course!) Usually, at least one member of your host family speaks conversational English.
Do I need a TEFL Certificate?
No, a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate is not required for this program, but getting certified is helpful, especially if you don't have any classroom teaching experience. International TEFL Academy offers an internationally recognized online TEFL course. Mention InterExchange to get $50 off tuition!
Can I be placed with a friend or partner?
We can sometimes place friends relatively close to one another, but not with the same host family.
Can I earn money while on the program?
This is a voluntary position and it's not possible to work on the side.
If I'm not accepted into the program will I receive a refund?
Yes, if you are not accepted or in the unlikely event that we are unable to place you, we will refund your $250 deposit. We will keep you posted throughout the placement process.
Why do I have to pay for a volunteer teaching program?
The fee covers the cost of placing you in the program, as well as pre-departure and in-country support. As a non-profit, mission-driven organization, InterExchange reinvests fees into programs and our Foundation to promote cross-cultural awareness.
