Arrival and Orientation
Choose your own date of arrival and enjoy two nights of transitional accommodation booked for you at one of the best downtown Sydney or Melbourne hostels (including breakfast!).
Orientation meetings are held several times each week, and cover topics including job markets, housing options, travel and safety, and logistics like taxes and setting up a phone plan.
The InterExchange partner office is just a few blocks from your hostel and the doors are open to you any weekday while you're in town. You'll also learn about any social events organized by our partner or the hostel.
Those who want a little more structure during their first week can opt for five extra nights (seven total) of accommodation plus group activities each day during your first week in Sydney or Melbourne. For the Welcome Week there are specific arrival dates. Please use the links above for specific activities and start dates.
There's a whole lot to see in Australia so we recommend staying for at least four or five months. Pack light and plan to explore beautiful beaches, happening cities and the mysteries of the Outback. You get to choose where and when you travel.
Many people stay in hostels here and there, or do some WWOOFing. If you want to settle in one place to work for a few months you'll no doubt want to organize an apartment and use it as a base for regional trips. The hosting centers in Sydney and Melbourne offer travel support during your program.
Working holiday participants generally take on seasonal positions lasting as short as a few days or as long as a few months. Typical jobs include hospitality work, casual event positions, fruit picking, warehouse labor, telemarketing and office temp jobs. Our partner maintains a sortable database listing positions throughout the country and friendly job support staff are available for extra support. You will receive your member login details to access the jobs database and a lot of other resources before traveling.
- Warehouse packing
- Fruit picking
- Ski resort positions
- Face-to-face fundraising for charities
This program is meant to smooth the road ahead of you once you've decided to take the leap have a working holiday in Australia. We're not doing everything for you - this is your adventure! But friendly staff are available to answer your questions about finding work, traveling, logistics like renting or purchasing a car and getting your tax ID number. Also, when you return from your program you'll get access to alumni resources including the InterExchange Language Partner Program, events and more!
Before you travel you will receive log-in details for your member profile and access to our jobs database. Once in Australia our partner's friendly staff will be available to consult with you about your job goals and travel plans.
What our participants are saying
I went abroad with InterExchange to Australia and New Zealand. I definitely would recommend it! My sister and I did a lot of the WWoofing program because we wanted to experience the full culture of the country. You stay with very friendly people and it is definitely a phenomenal experience. Bonnie
I know if I need anything I can send a quick email and be assisted right away. I feel secure with InterExchange staff and am grateful for the extensive information that has been provided. Keirsten
