What is an au pair to me?
What is an au pair to me? To me, an au pair is a brave adventurer who is looking to enrich their young adult life by coming to the U.S. to experience our American culture!
Au pairs come from around the world.
The au pairs that I meet are excited to work with you and your children while learning and participating in life in the USA. My au pairs have been from so many different countries, like Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium and so many others. It's always so exciting to learn about their culture, language and traditions as I get to know each and every one of them. I have met so many interesting young men and women that have taken their experiences here and gone on to become medical students, law students, teachers, hospitality managers and many other fun and exciting occupations. Some have even become parents themselves!
An au pair is a family member.
To my host families, an au pair is much more than a babysitter or nanny, he or she is a new member of the family, just with a different accent! My host families say that their favorite thing about hosting an au pair is bringing a new culture into their homes. Many of my host families have embraced their au pair's traditions even if it conflicts with their own in order to make them feel like it is their home too. Most of my au pairs love to share their culture through food and music by cooking their favorite dishes from home for their host family and teaching the children songs in their native language. This experience forms a lifelong bond between the family that doesn't end when they head back home. Most recently, one of my host families shared that they went to France to a former au pair's wedding and were so happy to share in her special day.
My au pairs have had so many great adventures while here in the U.S.
My au pairs have had so many great adventures while here in the U.S., whether they are traveling with their host families or seeing the country with their friends. It's so wonderful to see them form these lifelong friendships that they can never replace.
All in all, hosting an au pair is a wonderful experience for everyone involved. There is no greater joy for me than to see a perfectly matched host family and au pair, and seeing seeing that au pair get the most out of her or his time here with us in America.
