What is it?
An I-9 is a form that proves you are legally allowed to work in the United States. Every U.S. employer must verify that their employees have permission to work. You complete this form when you start a new job.
Who needs it?
Program | Do I Need This? | Au Pair USA | Yes |
|---|---|
Camp USA | Yes |
Career Training USA | Yes |
Work & Travel USA | Yes |
*This information pertains only to InterExchange-specific programming.
Note: For Career Training USA, even unpaid internships may still require the employer to complete an I-9. For Au Pair USA, au pairs complete Section 1, host families complete Section 2, and the host family keeps the form for their records.
Who manages it?
Your U.S. employer completes and keeps your I-9. It must be completed within three days of starting work. Your employer does not send it to any government agency unless requested during an inspection.
