What is included in the Program Fee?
The program fee of $795 covers matching and placement with your host family, as well as counseling sessions with a dedicated advisor to support your program participation.
Not Included in the Program Fee:
The program fee does NOT include flights and other transportation, travel medical insurance (see list here), and personal expenses.
When should I pay my program fee?
Upon the initial portion of the application, $100 is due. Upon initiation of the matching process, the remaining program balance will be due. Your InterExchange Advisor will provide guidance on exact dates according to your individual travel and trip timelines. See our information on payments and refunds.
Required Documents
Living with a family abroad requires documentation to ensure the health and safety of both you and your host family. Here are some of the documents you can expect to include:
- Language tutor application completed online in digital format
- 3-5 profile pictures of yourself to help host families identify and get to know you better
- Copy of your passport, which must be valid over over six months after your intended travel dates in Germany
- Letter to host family that describes you, your family, your past tutoring experience, and your goals
- Photo collage of you in everyday life with friends and family that represents your personality, loved ones, and interests
- Medical record verification form signed by your doctor that includes important medical history, allergies, and needed medications
- Personal recommendation letter written by a non-relative that describes who you are and their experiences with you
- Basic background check from the local law enforcement department in your home city/state/county (no fingerprints needed)
Application Process and Timeline
Below is a basic outline and timeline of the process. Please note: the full application and interview process can take about 2-3 months but varies per individual.
- Once you submit your application, InterExchange will review your materials.
- Interview with InterExchange in a brief virtual call (camera required).
- Application documents, which can take anywhere from 1 week to 1 month or more to put together.
- Interview with an advisor in Germany who will work on matching you with a host family. The matching process can take a few weeks depending on availability, location of families, and your preferences.
- Host family interview set up by your advisor. You may interview with more than one family to find the best fit for you both.
